Prefer ‘Ohana candidates? Be sure to vote in primary

The June 3 Maui News article laid out the challenge we face if we want to change the way the county operates (” ‘Old boy network’ in the crosshairs”). Colin Moore’s assessment made it clear that the big money is on the establishment (more of the same) candidates.

If people prefer the ‘Ohana candidates, a slate of nine progressive candidates for the council, plus Elle Cochran for mayor, they will need to vote in the primary to make sure several of the 10 make it to the general ballot (if two or fewer run for a council seat, their names will not be on the primary ballot).

I encourage everyone to register online to vote absentee (olvr.hawaii.gov). voters who mail in their choices vote 80 percent of the time but walk-ins only get to the polls about 30 percent of the time.
